Paris Hilton

Republican John McCain is chasing after the presidency with a campaign that is so inept that any other year he could be mistaken for the Democrat. Exhibit A was his attempt to lampoon Barack Obama’s crowd-stirring European tour with snippets of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

Any day I expect Obama’s camp to respond with a montage of McCain footage interspersed with images of Will Brimley and Bea Arthur. Simpler still, rerun the recent photos of McCain with former President George H. W. Bush. They might be standing outside a buffet restaurant after the 4 p.m. senior special and they cannot quite recall where they parked the car.

Hilton counterpunched with a video that exacted its own sweet revenge. Her parody riff, here, sounded more coherent about energy policy than either candidate on the stump.

How pathetic are we that we have to deal with such inane topics when selecting the president of the US. If the discussions were only on issues it would make it a lot easier to pick a candidate. Do people really think what Paris Hilton has to say matters to anyone but her. They say politics makes for strange bedfellows. But if they aren't more careful, they could end up in another sex tape starring Paris Hilton herself with both Obama and McCain as costars.

"Say what you will about Barack Obama, people gravitate when you have something positive to say...People want to follow hopeful, optimistic, civil, decent leaders. They don't want to follow some negative, scornful person." Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty at GOPAC on Aug. 6.

This could be the high point of the campaign. By November we'll all have regrets. But we'll always have Paris.
