A Barack Obama Assassination?
Posted by Lynne Varner
The possibility, however remote, exists in enough minds to garner a story on our front page today. The story explains that many baby boomers have some recollection, dim or vivid, of the dark days following the John F. Kennedy assassination. They remember that before Americans could recapture their innocence, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were gunned down.
In Las Vegas last summer addressing the National Association of Black Journalists, Obama acknowledged that some might be reluctant to support his candidacy out of a misguided sense of saving his life. I wrote about the Democrat from Illinois going off script for a moment and imploring the audience to take a chance, even if it meant taking a chance with his life. This after all, was what he was willing to do.
On the political hustings, Obama tries to brush off fears by reminding supporters that he is protected by the Secret Service. But former president Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded while surrounded by Secret Service guards. Two assassination attempts on former president Gerald Ford were thwarted by the Secret Service, but the would-be assassins and their weapons got pretty close to their target.
Chances of anyone being assassinated are slim. We live in a peaceful democracy. But perception is rarely rooted in reality, but rather in fear. I'll hop on the couch for a moment and speculate that some of us fear destroying a good thing by wanting it too much. A version of the adage, if something is too good to be true it probably is. But that's just me. What do you think?

I'm a boomer who was deeply affected by the deaths of JFK, RFK and MLK. While a agree we live in a peaceful democracy, bad things happen and I do feel a sense of dread. If Obama is elected, he can't fulfill all of the promises his campaign has generated, but I pray he's given a chance to try.

I think it's irresponsible of any paper to print this type of article. I've never seen anything like it for other presidential candidates. It's almost like the media is daring someone to try and one can only say SHAME!

absolutely agree with kma. A total bullsh*t piece. You mean President Clinton (the Hillary one) would be safe even though there is incredible hatred toward the Clinton's?

I also think this is an irresponcible article. It does seem like it's daring them. WE ARE NOT IN THE 1960'S. PRINTING OUT THESE KINDS OF ARTICLES ARE JUST PLAIN WRONG. SHAME!
