Chopp's Petty comments still resonating

Posted by David Postman at 8:11 AM

At a NASCAR race in Las Vegas over the weekend Richard Petty was asked about House Speaker Frank Chopp's false suggestion that Petty had a drunk driving arrest on his record.

Chopp apologized on Feb. 22 when Petty and others were in Olympia lobbying for funding plan for a Kitsap County NASCAR track.

But it turns out Petty didn't know what Chopp was talking about. From NASCAR Scene Daily:

"When I walked out the door, I said, 'What's he apologizing for?'" Petty said. "Then they started going through all that, the different stuff he said.

"I said, 'I'm glad you didn't tell me what he really said because I might have went on him if I had known what he really said.'

Chopp made the comments Feb. 21 at his weekly meeting with Capitol reporters. At least they were weekly up until then. He hasn't had the press corps back since the Petty comments were published.
