  • Mike McGavick published an open letter in Roll Call to ask D.C. political operatives to stay out of the gutter in any independent campaigning they do against Sen. Maria Cantwell. I know he has his doubters about this whole civility thing, but this letter is more than most have done to try to quash negative ads run for their benefit.
  • Former Republican Congressman George Nethercutt writes in the Wall Street Journal that Democrats need to do more than just not be Republicans if they have any chance of seeing the sort of gains that swept him and the GOP into power.
    But voter unrest does not by itself portend wholesale electoral change. Even disgruntled Americans are reluctant to "fire" incumbents if they think they're just trading in one pol for another, regardless of party. That's the lesson of 1994.

    He's got a warning for his friends, too.

    Today my former colleagues seem tired, conflicted and defensive about holding their majority in the face of huge budget deficits, an unpopular and difficult war, and the inefficiencies that come with a bigger government bureaucracy — all at a time when a few Republican and Democratic members face their own ethical issues.
  • At Sound Politics Stefan Sharkansky calls out one of his readers for his attacks on McGavick and Dave Reichert as Republicans in Name Only. Sharkansky suggests the guy lives in a fantasy world ruled by Gov. Ellen Craswell and Sen. Linda Smith.
