Obama, Gregoire and Hanford

Posted by David Postman

When Gov. Chris Gregoire endorsed Barack Obama in February,

She said she talked with Obama four times, including a 30-minute conversation that impressed her with his grasp of health care and Washington state-specific issues.

But over the weekend, when asked about Gregoire’s pet issue of clean-up of the nuclear waste from Hanford, Obama said:

"Here's something that you will rarely hear from a politician, and that is that I'm not familiar with the Hanford site, so I don't know exactly what's going on there. … Now, having said that, I promise you I'll learn about it by the time I leave here on the ride back to the airport."

Obama’s response to the question is sort of the Microsoft Windows approach: That’s not a glitch, that’s a new feature. (I think this could catch on with other professions, too. Imagine, "Here's something that you will rarely hear from a surgeon: Oops."

But Obama’s attempt to turn nuclear waste into lemonade made me wonder what state-specific issues he and the governor talked about for half an hour. Did Gregoire bring up Hanford, an issue she has dealt with going back more than 15 years when she was director of the Department of Ecology? I asked her communications director, Pearse Edwards. He said:

The Governor talked to Senator Obama about a host of state and national issues- health care and global climate change, in particular - and his vision for the country. The Senator and the Governor have a strong relationship and she will continue to talk to the Senator about issues that impact Washington state. The Governor is aware of the Senator's comments on Hanford, an issue that is important to her. Given Senator Obama's excellent record on the environment and his most recent comments supporting the Hanford site cleanup effort, she has all the confidence that she and Senator Obama will work well together on issues that affect Washingtonians.

BO said on health care to her when I run this country I want to assure you that all hospitals in your state will still have nurses.

a 30-minute conversation that impressed her with his grasp of health care and Washington state-specific issues.

BO said on Washington state-specific issues when I run this country I will make sure that cherries will still be produced in your state.

After hearing the above from BO it was reported in the mansion that Gregoire fainted.

Two buffoons on the same wavelength produce happy faces.:)

Would you rather he pretended to know and blathered on unintelligently? Or perhaps that he said he didn't know and didn't care?

Hanford is obviously in the forefront in the Tri-Cities and Pendleton areas but even in western WA I'd wager that most folks couldn't tell you what the issues are with nuclear waste at Hanford. That an Illinois politician didn't have instant recall on a local issue isn't particularly surprising.

I'd prefer he'd have been briefed, but in lieu of that, what else should Obama have done but be completely honest and promise to learn more?

Yet again, I think the governor needs to review and revamp her communications staff. That is one of the most hackneyed press statements I've read in some time ...

How many communications personnel has she been through?

Check out the video comparing John McCain's position on Hanford to Barack Obama's.

D Huygens,
Oh, I thought BO was a US Senator in DC?

The name "Hanford ,Washington" shouldn't be a memory loss for a Senator of this country unless the uses of his big ears is for something other than hearing!

Oh, forgive me I forgot he spent only 4 months in the Senate and was 8 years old when Hanford started to leak.
Another dumb senator !

When you consider that Dubya didn't know that a gallon of gas had reached $4, a rather everyperson's weekly reality, why would you think a west coast hot spot issue makes frequent national news. I've not forgotten watching national network news when Mt. St. Helens erupted--according to New York's version, Seattle was buried in ash. And we know easterners still can't pronounce Yakima, Puyallup, or sometimes Oregon.

When a politico can admit they don't know and need to do more homework--fine--be honest.

McCain's entire NW tour was focused on environmental issues so of course he was briefed. Duh.

To Kat,

The Senate authorized Billions of my tax dollars on the CLEAN UP OF HANFORD EVERY YEAR.

This is done by a vote in the Senate; BO apparently can spend time in a church and in the Senate and hear nothing!

So this is the change you want to run this country?

News ALERT for Kat,

President G.W. Bush isn’t on the ballot this year you must get your news from Seattle Times.

Have a great day Kat.

It is inconceibable that in a 30-min talk between Gregoire and Obama on ''WA-specific issues'' that Hanford would not have been prominently mentioned; especially given that is one of the Gov's favorite pet issues.

Reading Pearse Edwards' above attempt to bob, weave, and spin was a real hoot.

Didn't Ronald Reagan help sink Slade Gorton's re-elect campaign by appearing in Spokane and responding to a question about Hanford being a dumpsite for nuclear waste by saying: "What's a Hanford?"

It was sorta late in that campaign. Gorton's challenger, Brock Adams, made Gorton's "do-nothing" approach to the proposed Hanford waste dump a big issue.

This Obama thing is different. He took the question in Pendleton, Oregon - not Spokane. (Hanford is not typically a pressing issue for Pendleton, which is not downriver and 85 miles away.)

Gorton had not done anything to stop Hanford from becoming a nuclear waste dump. Greogoire has enormous credibility when it comes to cleaning up Hanford.

I'll bet the next time Obama or his surrogates come to Washington, they'll be ready to demonstrate that were it not for earmarks by members of Congress from Washington, Hanford's cleanup would not be adequately funded. Would John McCain veto fudning necessary to keep the cleanup of Hanford on track?

It’s unfortunate for us voters to have two candidates that know nothing!

One is Gregorie when asked any question that’s not in her play book looks like a deer when hit with headlights. Next is Mr.Barack Hussein Obama when questioned about anything not in his playbook stumbles. The very next day he will then tell us what he really means. Is this the guy we want to have his finger on the button and the next day say opps? Well, maybe everyone knows most left wing voters of Wa. have no moral values and vote by knees jerk reactions. Just look at the bunch they have elected.

Pray for our troops and have a respectful Memorial Day

God Bless,

John

John,
Are you confusing Memorial Day with Veteran's Day?
This weekend is a memorial to FALLEN soldiers - most recently those sent to slaughter by an incomprehensible Bush/McCain foreign policy.
I don't care if Obama doesn't yet know where Washington State is, let alone its specific issues.
For all their supposed knowledge and experience, your republicans couldn't have screwed things up any worse these last few years.
Better a blank-slate newbie than an experienced idiot who thinks GWB's domestic agenda is just peachy.
How about honoring our fallen soldiers on MEMORIAL DAY (not Veterans Day) by giving some thought to what our Iraq soldiers died for?
I know, I know....the reality of this pitiful waste is too painful to acknowledge.

How many of those people in Western Washington who cannot tell you about Hanford are running for president? And how many of the people in Western Washington who cannot tell you about Hanford are US Senators who VOTED ON A BILL FOR HANFORD FUNDING?

So basically what our Obamaniac friends are telling us is that Obama blindly votes for things he has no clue about.

The bill by the way was S.1042. Now some Obamaniacs are going to tell us that it must have been buried too deep for the good senator to read. Nope. It was in the title :

'SEC. 3112. COST ESTIMATE FOR WASTE TREATMENT AND IMMOBILIZATION PLANT PROJECT, HANFORD SITE, RICHLAND, WASHINGTON.''
