Former SnoCo sheriff may challenge Larsen in 2nd District

Posted by David Postman

MOUNT VERNON -- Former Snohomish County Sheriff Rick Bart is close to announcing he’ll run for Congress against Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Lake Stevens.

Bart appeared last night at the Skagit Valley Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner. He said in his brief remarks:

There needs to be a new sheriff in Congress, and it’s going to be me.

Bart told me he hasn’t made his final decision, but said, “We’ll give it a shot, more than likely.” He’s been talking to people in the 2nd Congressional District and checking to see what the money situation is. Raising campaign funds, he said, looks to be “very, very, very tough.”

He also says Larsen is a friend. Larsen was on the Snohomish County Council while Bart served as sheriff.

Bart told Skagit Republicans he was the first GOP sheriff in Snohomish County in at least 40 years. Among those urging him to run, he said, was Congressman Dave Reichert, R-Auburn. Reichert is the former King County sheriff and the two served together on the task force that investigated the Green River serial killings.

He said that Reichert calls him once a week.

He’s begging me to run and I keep asking him why and he says he’s lonely.
Bart was sheriff from 1995 until he was term-limited last year from running again. He had planned to run against Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon, but dropped out citing family and personal reasons. Last year he was also a finalist for U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Washington.

Bart didn’t talk much about Larsen last night. But he told the crowd here:

The issue is change. I don’t know if you’re hearing that from a lot of politicians, but I’m sure hearing it.

State Republican Chairman Luke Esser said it’d be tough for anyone to take on an incumbent member of Congress. But he thinks that Bart’s right to talk about change, which has emerged as the primary theme of the presidential campaign. Esser told me:

All we hear is change, change, change. That’s a real interesting dynamic. In the state of Washington, change is a good message for Republicans, and for different reasons than Barack Obama says.

In other Congressional news, Reichert will get some big-name help to start his re-election fundraising. First Lady Laura Bush will headline an event Feb. 27th for Reichert in Medina.

Bizarre. I can't imagine why any Republican would want to jump into a race against an incumbent Democrat this year, especially in a Democratic district. It's a lot more likely that Reichert will lose his seat than Bart will gain this one.

Do we really need yet another "sheriff" in Congress?

Meanwhile...

Reichert will get some big-name help to start his re-election fundraising.

"Start"?

So George Bush's fund raising visit last year was just for fun and totally unrelated to his re-election fundraising efforts?

Reichert probably won't need the money to beat that Unemployed Eric Oemig clone running against him. Has she declared who she is supporting for President yet Daniel? Or does she have to wait for Sandeep to tell her who to support. Way to be on the cutting edge.

The comment implying that Darcy Burner is unemployed is probably correct, considering that she seems to have plenty of time for campaigning. The other 8th District candidates, Dave Reichert and Mark Greene, both work full-time jobs. Reichert as an environmentally-conscious congressman and Mark Greene as an administrative clerk. Mark is chairman of the environmentally-conscious Party of Commons.

evergreen_representative (or Mark Greene himself I'm guessing) - Spare us with the "Party of Commons" crap. I'm just about ready to challenge this Mark Greene guy for the chairmanship of his self-aggrandizing party representing no one but himself. Where do I sign up?

As for Reichert's environmental record, it is spotty at best.

Went to school with Aaron Reardon, played ball with Rick Bart's kids growing up - guess you could say he could be my daddy, LOL. What I see is a game and as Bart would have lost to Reardon, also young enough to be Bart's son, he will lose to Larsen. Change? What does that mean anyway? Typically means more taxes, lesser quality of life. At least in Washington. Bart would be wise to sit this one out and not waste a bunch of tough, tough, tough to get, donated campaign funds. Reichert? Can we ask Sue Rahr what she inherited and what challenges she continues to face today? We can go round and rouond about the "issues", but the fact is it's a game, a popularity contest and in truth, none of these people should have or have had their positions of office.

P.S. People need to speak up about the Supes - letting Bennett and the NBA just steal them from the City of Seattle. These people are corrupt and malicious and you can thank Howie Schultz for opening the door - bottom line, greedy son of a ..... Tell Ballmer to forget about Yahoo and buy himself some Sonics.

Bart's always had a tough time raising money and he's chosen a lousy year to run as a Republican. I wonder if he'll sit on the race for months like he did with the Executive position, dropping out only after it's too late for anyone else to put together a decent run?

I see it now - Barf for Congress!

Go back to sleep Rick. This republican will be the first to send a donation to Larsen for Congress. We don't need Rick Bart's brand of justice in Washington DC any more than we need the other Tin Star Cowboy!

Well, Darcy Burner may be "unemployed" now, but then again so was Mitt Romney, and plenty of people voted for him in the primary...it seems to be what out of work execs do!

Darcy was an executive? Do tell, apparently that was news to Microsoft last time around. She was also not a Volunteer, not a public servant, not a charity fundraiser and not in touch with her district.

Darcy does camplian about a bias against Democratic Women candidates. She complains about lack of investment in education in public schools, yet she doesn't participate in her own school district or in their foundation. Where does her son go to school again?

P.S.

Just a note to clear any confusion regarding names. Mark, a Biblical name, is quite common in America. Neither the Party of Commons (evergreen_representative) or chairman Mark Greene writes to the Postman blog under the name "Mark," and never has.

Rumor in Pacific County is that 'Democratic" sheriff, John Didion, has been meeting regularly with Dave Reichert and is thinkingabout challenging Brian Baird--as a Repubican. i wonder if Reichert is enlisting all the sheriffs in the State to form a new wave of law and order candidates from the Right.
