Borat brouhahaComments: 32 Have you seen "Borat"? Was it for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan? Or Make Idiot of American Public? Selected comments Had some funny one liners, but it went too far with the naked wrestling. The scene with the frat boys (who are now suing) was excellent. Posted by Charles Green at 01:01 PM, Nov 13, 2006 It seems to me a lot of people are over-thinking the Borat movie. All I know is it made me laugh more, and harder, than any movie I have ever seen. Posted by BS at 01:09 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Sux.. the Movie Trailer was interesting but that was all the humor there was in the movie. The Running of the Jews was not appropriate. Posted by Marshall Smith at 01:17 PM, Nov 13, 2006 So awesome - I didn't think anybody could be shocking anymore - per Charles, it was truly shocking, but overall - one of the wildest movie experiences I've ever had. Posted by Ben at 01:21 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I thought the best part was when the two guys wrestled naked. I almost fell out of my seat, I was laughing so hard. Overall, it was super hilarious! I don't know how you couldn't find it funny...maybe you just have no sense of humor! Posted by Jessica at 01:30 PM, Nov 13, 2006 all i can say is I loved the movie. But its just a movie, people need to learn how to grow up and not take everything so seriously. And those sorority boys are just upset because it showed them as they really are. Posted by Lindy at 01:31 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Good art, provocative art, should challenge your assumptions and world view. If you found the naked wrestling offensive, or the Running of the Jews, you must ask yourself - WHY is this funny? Why do so many other people in the theater seem to be laughing hysterically? If you can get over yourself, and laugh at the absurdity of it all, you will be on your way to being a better person. The "Running of the Jews" is funny on many levels - not the least of which is Sacha ("Borat") Cohen is Jewish. It also lampoons very real attitudes towards Jews in eastern Europe. If the "Running of the Jews" can do anything, it can make existing anti-semitism seem silly, stupid, and - hopefully, in the future - irrelevant. And as for the naked wrestling? That was merely silly. If you're offended by it, you need to grow up a little. Posted by alan at 01:40 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I have not seen the movie, nor will I do so. As a person who was often on the "bad" side of jokes like this while growing up I find no humor in making fun of people in a mean or underhanded way. I find the whole idea offensive and not the way to encourage all people to love and care about each other. Posted by Deborah Alverson at 01:41 PM, Nov 13, 2006 It was funny. I laughed through the whole thing. I thought it made fun of American's more than anything (especially bigoted, racist, homophobes. Posted by batgirl at 01:42 PM, Nov 13, 2006 While there were funny moments, I found myself wishing it would end. Posted by Nik Let at 01:42 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Your critic, Moira MacDonald called it "cheerfully tasteless". Right on. Some good belly laughs and some cringingly bad "jokes". But it was never to be taken seriously. And those people who "unwittingly" took part in the movie weren't the brightest bulbs anyway. Why not poke fun? I'll bet "Pamilla" Anderson eventually figured out it was all in fun. High five! Posted by Todd at 01:45 PM, Nov 13, 2006 What a great country! Only in the "U.S. and A" can you act like a flaming idiot, then find an attorney to try and strike it rich filing a lawsuit against the organization that filmed you acting like a flaming idiot. Posted by Buck Patterson at 01:51 PM, Nov 13, 2006 The movie was a comedy and people need to realize that. Compare it to the South Park movie, everyone is a target so you can't get upset about the jokes. The frat boys are upset because people know how they really are now! Posted by Dawn at 01:53 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I am an American, living in England. I lived in Australia for 6 years before moving here. Just for the record, people still love America and the American people, be careful what the media feeds you, but we need to lighten up and laugh at ourselves. The movie is fun! Lighten up and be proud of the U.S. Oh, by the way the real Borat is Jewish-see what I mean about laughing at yourself? Posted by Cathryn Halpin at 01:58 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Absolutely loved it! Although I went into the theatre knowing who "Borat" was, I would have liked it just the same had I not. If the average person goes in with an open mind knowing that this is JUST ENTERTAINMENT, then they will laugh out loud right along with the rest of the audience. Definitely worth the ticket price. As for the people upset about the way they were seen in the movie? You should always live your life as if the world can see it. So if they're ashamed of their behavior or comments made, then they can only be upset with themselves. Posted by Mandy at 02:14 PM, Nov 13, 2006 This movie did not make idiots of the American public. Most people featured were either rude, stupid, bigots, or wildly ignorant. They got duped because of one of these flaws, and rightfully deserved it because society doesn't respect those characteristics. This was one funny movie, please don't be so serious and get offended by modern joking. Nothing went too far in the movie, though they should go back and pay those Romanians portaryed as Borat's townsmen a real wage. Posted by NJersey at 02:16 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I think Borat is awesome, and Cohen is a genius. He has been taking shots at us Brits forver, and we laugh about it, and at ourselves. I think the US should do the same. Kazakhstan has a sense of humour about the movie, and invited him over. Posted by Chandira at 02:26 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Oh, and Cohen is Jewish, it's called irony. ;-) Posted by Chandira at 02:28 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I tend to be the type who dislikes "tasteless" humor...but I loved Borat. I live in the UK right now, and all of us were howling in the seats, even as we cringed. No sympathy for me re: the frat boys. If their excuse is that they were inebriated, well...how many of us spout racist or sexist garbage when we're drunk?? You can't blame alcohol for your own bigotry. Posted by ecogrrl at 03:02 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I loved the Borat movie. I have been a big fan of "Da Ali G Show" for years and was so excited Cohen made a movie. Posted by JS at 03:18 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Horrifying? You bet. Hilarious? Absolutely. Thought provoking? Astonishingly so. If Sacha Baron Cohen had only made fun of Jews or only made fun of the South or only made fun of homosexuals then, yes, it would have been a wretchedly offensive movie. But the simple fact is this film hit everyone equally, none more so than Sacha Baron Cohen himself. I mean seiously, pinned under a fat, naked, hairy man? Who got the short end of the stick? In all, I like! Posted by Autumn Sakai at 03:22 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Very Slapstick. The naked guys part was...well, mostly funny to the guys, I think. The un-political correctness did not bother me, as that was *the point* of the humor. I had a few good laughs, but all in all I was disappointed that it wasn't as funny as I had heard it was. I'd recommend waiting for the rental. Posted by Cynthia at 03:27 PM, Nov 13, 2006 This movie is pariody in a new twist... a lot of laffs at the expense of others... anyone who listens to Seattle radio over the years would know this, its just on the silver screen this time! Posted by Larry Jensen at 03:29 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Why are people up in arms about this movie? Its so over the top that you cant take it seriously. These must be the same people that hate South Park. Lighten up! It is sexy time! Posted by Jessica Johnson at 03:31 PM, Nov 13, 2006 For those that can't get enough, they should check out season one and two of Cohen's "Da Ali G Show" which features about 20 Borat skits that he did before the movie came out that are just as funny (if not more) than the ones in the film :) Posted by Matthew at 04:31 PM, Nov 13, 2006 People upset by the film take themselves and life far to seriously. Cohen is the most brilliant comic actor since Peter Seller. Funniest movie I've ever seen and I'll go again. Posted by Jeff Trisler at 04:31 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I'm an American and saw Borat last week while in Edinburgh. While at times I was embarrassed at the portrayal of American's, that was only because it was so realistic, dead on! I've met frat boys like that! I've heard sentiments like that uttered by mid westerners, and god help us, revival meetings sound just like that. But come on! We need to get over ourselves and laugh. I'm wondering if the ones so offended ar the ones who's behavior this movie most resembles? I'm just sayin'. Posted by hjshaffer at 04:55 PM, Nov 13, 2006 Mr. Cohen has ample talent. It is a shame he could not find a more positive outlet. Embarrassing unwitting people and exploiting religious and ethnic stereotypes demean his gift. Being able to make money by pandering to the crass adds nothing of value to the world.I was disappointed to hear laughter at the expense of others. Posted by Jeff Levy at 05:45 PM, Nov 13, 2006 There's a huge difference between laughing at another's expense and pure non-offensive joy. One is real. The other is not. One is helpful. The other hurts. Posted by S Gill at 05:47 PM, Nov 13, 2006 If you see the movie trailer, you may as well save your money, those are the laughs. The rest of the movie is very hard to watch. Posted by patd at 07:47 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I can only describe the movie as pointless and tasteless shock therapy. It had a few bright moments, but still too cheap for my taste. Posted by Ian Lasas at 08:30 PM, Nov 13, 2006 I'm pretty sure this was the funniest movie I have ever seen. I will be buying it the day it comes out on DVD. and for those suing saying "they were distracted by the money" it is your fault. read the papers! if you sign your name, you give them consent to do with the film as they please! If he went after one race, ethnicity, sex, etc, then I could see people taking offense, but he made fun of EVERYBODY! Get over it and find the humor in it. You should have known what you were getting into seeing this movie! Posted by Ryan at 09:12 PM, Nov 13, 2006 |
