Starbucks ranked one of the biggest green power purchasers in the U.S.

Starbucks ranks 18th among green power purchasers in the U.S., according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership.

Wind power represents 20 percent of Starbucks' U.S. electricity use, the partnership said. The ranking is based on how many kilowatt-hours of power a company buys. Starbucks buys about 211 million kilowatt-hours of wind power a year through a company called 3Degrees.

Buying green power is meant to reduce the environmental impact of using electricity and support the development of renewable energy resources. Other big purchasers include Whole Foods (100 percent of its electricity), the U.S. Department of Energy (3 percent) and Dell (158 percent).
