It's official: Windows 7 for the holidays, probably August RTM

Microsoft finally nailed down the arrival time for Windows 7, sort of, today at its TechEd conference in Los Angeles.
It may seem anticlimactic, after the steady progression of the software, but it's a huge milestone for a flagship product that will generate billions for Microsoft and potentially overcome the tarnish left by Windows Vista.
Windows VP Bill Veghte told developers at the event that "Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability,'' according to this release.
The operating system should be released to computer makers in roughly three months, according to a blog post this morning by Windows engineering bosses Steven Sinofsky and Jon DeVaan.
They said there's no specific deadline date but Windows 7 is in the home stretch of testing, heading toward the systems' "release to manufacturing."
"If the feedback and telemetry on Windows 7 match our expectations then we will enter the final phases of the RTM process in about 3 months," they said.
