Tivo gets new mobile controls, from Redmond's Mobui

Posted by Brier Dudley

Redmond's Mobui built a new mobile TV guide search and scheduling application that TiVo is announcing this morning.

The free app lets people browse TiVo's guide and schedule recordings via any mobile phone with a browser. Not just the iPhone and Android devices, for a change.

TiVo's offering it to anyone who wants to use its guide to "browse, search and discover television shows" whether or not they have one of its digital video recorders.

To access the service, point your phone's browser at m.tivo.com. It's releasing in beta today and will be broadly available in a few weeks. It can schedule shows on TiVo Series 2 or Series 3 boxes.

TiVo's offering the service for free, but it paid Mobui for the development work.

Mobui's been benefiting from video services extending their reach with mobile applications lately. Last week VH1 announced a Mobui-developed application that lets VH1 fans chat and discuss shows, occasionally with show stars.

The TiVo deal also further explains why Mobui bought mobile developer Action Engine last month: Industry connections.

Action Engine built a mobile scheduling application for TiVo awhile back, but it worked only on Verizon's network. Tivo came back when it wanted a more broadly accessible version.

Gadgets and games | Fun stuff I've written about lately includes Apple's iPhone, Hewlett-Packard's HDX laptop and Microsoft's Halo3. Also on the radar are new digital video boxes such as the Tivo HD and the Vudu.
