Deal of the day: Laplink giving away $50 PCmover to celebrate anniversary

Posted by Brier Dudley

This is better than champagne: Bellevue-based Laplink is celebrating its 25th birthday by giving away its flagship product, PCmover, for 24 hours.

It's a generous offer and an impressive milestone -- there aren't many standalone PC software companies that have lasted 25 years, and even fewer that are still posting 30 percent to 40 percent annual growth.

Laplink started in 1983 as "Traveling Software" and pioneered the market for products to transfer files from one PC to another. It remains privately held, with only one outside investor -- Microsoft.

Along with the free download -- and giveaways such as a free laptop -- Chief Executive Thomas Koll posted a thank you message to customers on Laplink's site. An excerpt:

Laplink was here before PCs were a mainstay for businesses or consumers. We were here before the Internet boom -- and we were here throughout the dotcom boom and bust. We saw broadband connectivity become a reality and remote access become a necessity.

Today, we're still here and we're still helping businesses and consumers save time and stay connected.

Here's a link to the free software.

Gadgets and games | Fun stuff I've written about lately includes Apple's iPhone, Hewlett-Packard's HDX laptop and Microsoft's Halo3. Also on the radar are new digital video boxes such as the Tivo HD and the Vudu.
