New Yorker Cartoon Controversy
Posted by Eric Devericks
Yesterday, I was invited to talk with Frank Shiers on the radio at 710 Kiro about this now infamous cover of The New Yorker magazine. It was an interesting conversation and fun to listen to the callers afterward.
If you are interested in reading more thoughts on this controversy I've compiled a list blogs and news.
Lynne Varner, The Seattle Times
Nick Anderson, The Houston Chronicle
Howard Kurtz, The Washington Post
Alexander Burns, The Politico (interview several cartoonists)
Philip Kennicott, The Washington Post

I hear dumb people: "There must be some truth to it, why else would The New Yorker create such a caricature?"
Clearly it's satire, but it fails to portray the people behind the rumors. It could also be argued that the cover reinforces the rumors for the many buffoons who'll believe anything without asking questions or turning the pages to read the facts. It could also help Obama by calling attention to the rumors and the people who repeat them. It might even invigorate his supporters to work even harder to put him in office.
A little wagging elephant tail down in the bottom far-right corner would have been a nice touch.

Your cartoon of Obama and wife is in poor taste. Then again, it shows you want the republician side to win, and think this will taint the minds of americians. Are you next going to show McCain glotting, and wife with him holding all her money. Lets now get real and remember that todays society is voting for people with charachter, and not by gender or ethnic background. No more will people stand for a poor excuse of a president elect that is one sided, and not looking out for the mass of middle class and poor.

Why do you say "Your?" Did you think this cartoon was created by Eric Devericks? If so, then you just validated my point about people not bothering to read or understand the facts. Even if you didn't mean Devericks, it just shows how a rumor can get started with the placement of one word.

I'm a democrat but I always thought she was a little militant and racist "At first, she admitted, she thought "he must be weird" — in part because he was biracial and grew up in Hawaii" (Postman, Seattle Times, July 18, 2008). so, in the eyes of a black women, being biracial is "weird," or is it wierd to grow up in Hawaii. Then there is the ever famous comment on being a proud American. And good old Barry there, I just feel he is hiding something. Speaks of change, but change what, how? This is the first election in 20 years I won't vote democrat, no matter who he pick for VP.

I still don't find the humor in this despite being "satire"; it's filled with bad taste and fuel for the white right wing. Truly can't believe this printed!

The would-be first lady looks like Angela Yvonne Davis, the militant from the 1960s. Barack Obama looks like Jesus wearing a US Navy sailor cap.
Eric, if you had any b_lls you would depict Jesse Jackson cutting the n_ts off Barack.
