Confessions of an "Idol" addict
It's corny, it's predictable, it's often ear-piercing, but many of us can't get enough of it. Yup, it's "American Idol." Season 8 of America's most-watched TV show is under way. Check this space for news, video clips and take-no-prisoners critiques. And your commentary is vital too!

Week 15 of Ranking the Field: Best of "American Idol"
Posted by Bob Payne

This is my power ranking of the remaining contestants in Season 8 of "American Idol," and it will be updated every week. If you disagree with my ranking, by all means use the comments area to share your own.
This is my perception of the a given singer's potential to win the competition. It's not my personal ranking.
So it boils down to this: Can anyone catch Adam Lambert? The cheers are deafening when he hits the stage each week. And if he does win, do you think he can be commercially successful? I'm still a little not so sure.
Meantime, while a lot of critics are still in awe of Allison's voice, it's unnerving to see her in the bottom three. For whatever reason, she's not getting enough love from the voters.
And that leaves Matt, Danny and Kris. I have to believe Kris has the best potential to give Adam some competition. Setting aside actual singing talent for a second, Kris has that all-American personality and look that plays pretty well in "red-state" parts of the country, and that could be a formidable voting bloc.
On to the rankings:
1. (Last week: 1) Adam Lambert (Hollywood, Calif.) — He's really rockin' the k.d. lang/Elvis look these days, isn't he? Even his harshest critics would have to admire how well he's handled being the front-runner: He comes across as pretty modest. Videos.
2. (tied for 2) Kris Allen (Little Rock, Ark.) — The judges raved about his version of "She Works Hard For The Money." And it was great to actually hear his guitar playing. His arrangements are consistently inventive. I want to see him without band accompaniment though -- just his voice and his guitar. Videos.
3. (tied for 2) Allison Iraheta (Los Angeles) — I'd like to think she's one of the favorites based on raw talent, but landing in the bottom three is a bad sign. I'm not sure the "Rat Pack" theme Tuesday night is going to help her, either. Videos.
4. (5) Danny Gokey (Milwaukee, Wis.) — Paula says he's got one of the sexiest voices she's ever heard. She and many others are still saying he's bound to make it to finale night. But there's a quiet murmur out there about whether that gravelly voice can carry him that far. (Videos)
5. (6) Matt Giraud (Kalamazoo, Mich.) — All you can say about this guy is that he's lucky he's still in the field. He had one of the best performances of the season ("So Small"), but since then he seems to be struggling amid all the pressure. He needs a confidence boost! Videos.
