Confessions of an "Idol" addict
It's corny, it's predictable, it's often ear-piercing, but many of us can't get enough of it. Yup, it's "American Idol." Season 8 of America's most-watched TV show is under way. Check this space for news, video clips and take-no-prisoners critiques. And your commentary is vital too!

Week 12 of Ranking the Field: Best of "American Idol"
Posted by Bob Payne
This is my power ranking of the remaining contestants in Season 8 of "American Idol," and it will be updated every week. If you disagree with my ranking, by all means use the comments area to share your own.
1. (Last week: 1) Adam Lambert (Hollywood, Calif.) — There's no denying lots of people can't wait to see what he does next. Paula Abdul compared him to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith - I don't know if I'd go that far. Videos.
2. (7) Kris Allen (Little Rock, Ark.) — Kris was the big mover this week . He could be the best dark horse in the field right now. His work on the arrangements of the songs he sings points to a great feel for music. Videos.
3. (2) Danny Gokey (Milwaukee, Wis.) — He pushed himself more last Tuesday and it paid off. I wish Danny good luck this Tuesday, with the theme of "year you were born" -- 1980 was a grim year for pop music. (Videos)
4. (3) Allison Iraheta (Los Angeles) — I thought the judges went overboard with the critique of her appearance on Tuesday. And her performance? It was decent enough. Videos.
5. (4) Matt Giraud (Kalamazoo, Mich.) — I'm a little dismayed at all the criticism of his performance last Tuesday. On the other hand, he wasn't in the bottom three so it couldn't have been that bad. Videos.
6. (5) Lil Rounds (Memphis, Tenn.) — Lil is in dire need of some subtlety. Maybe she'll find a fun song to sing this week to lighten the mood. (Videos)
7. (8) Scott MacIntyre (Scottsdale, Ariz.) — He rebounded with a decent performance Tuesday night. But let's face the truth here: While he's a nice guy and it's amazing what he's done considering his disability, he has no chance of winning this thing, now does he? Videos.
8. (6) Anoop Desai (Chapel Hill, N.C.) — I have this premonition that Anoop singing an '80s song will be a nightmare. Prove me wrong, Noop Dawg! Videos.
