Confessions of an "Idol" addict

It's corny, it's predictable, it's often ear-piercing, but many of us can't get enough of it. Yup, it's "American Idol." Season 8 of America's most-watched TV show is under way. Check this space for news, video clips and take-no-prisoners critiques. And your commentary is vital too!

Week nine of Ranking the Field: Best of "American Idol"

Posted by Bob Payne

Ranking the Field is my power ranking of the remaining contestants in Season 8 of "American Idol," and it will be updated every week. If you disagree with my ranking, by all means use the comments area to share your own.

The changes in the ranking this week really only involve two people: Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai. They've essentially swapped places after Giraud shined with Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" and Desai bombed with the gloved one's "Beat It." For Desai, it wasn't so much that he performed the song poorly; it's just that having the audacity to attempt such an iconic pop classic can only succeed if you completely ace the performance. And he didn't.

Ranking the Field

1. (Last week: 1) Lil Rounds (Memphis, Tenn.) — Lil is big, as in a force to be reckoned with. But she's catching some criticism for merely parroting the original versions of the songs. (Videos)

2. (2) Danny Gokey (Milwaukee, Wis.) — He's got a strong fan base. If the raspy tone of his vocals doesn't become tiresome after repeated listenings, he's in great shape. (Videos)

3. (3) Alexis Grace (Memphis, Tenn.) — The judges were too hard on Alexis after she sang "Dirty Diana." And let's see if the outfit continues to get skimpier by the week. Videos.

4. (5) Adam Lambert (Hollywood, Calif.) — Like his style or hate it, Adam made the biggest impression in Tuesday's performances. Videos.

5. (11) Matt Giraud (Kalamazoo, Mich.) — Mr. Dueling Pianos finally got to sit at the baby grand and he made the most of the opportunity. Videos.

6. (7) Allison Iraheta (Los Angeles) — Is she going to be this season's token rocker chick? Naw, she's more versatile than that, and at only 16. Videos.

7. (8) Kris Allen (Little Rock, Ark.) — I think the country theme on Tuesday will play right into his strengths — pickin' and grinnin'! Videos.

8. (9) Scott MacIntyre (Scottsdale, Ariz.) — He's an excellent piano player and a really nice guy. But the vocals? Only decent. Videos.

9. (10) Michael Sarver (Jasper, Texas) — He's got the style and temperament to knock a fun country song out of the park on Tuesday. But I still can't see him making it deep into the competition. Videos.

10. (12) Megan Corkrey (Sandy, Utah) — Megan has been Simon's pet &@8212; until this past week. The consequences? She made the bottom four. Videos.

11. (4) Anoop Desai (Chapel Hill, N.C.) — He's counting his blessings after nearly getting booted. How many second chances will America give him? The country theme this week doesn't do him any favors. Videos.
