"American Idol" Top 36, Group 1 wrapup: Welcome to the big time, Alexis Grace

Chalk one up for the petite woman with a big voice, Alexis Grace (pictured at right). The young mother from Memphis, Tenn., was the surprise find in Group 1 of the "American Idol" Top 36 on Tuesday night.
Her take on Aretha Franklin's "Never Loved A Man" was powerful and memorable, unlike the majority of the night's performances. Here's a breakdown of the evening:
Future's looking bright
- Alexis Grace.
- Danny Gokey. He provided a nice close to the show, but I thought the judges were somewhat excessive in their praise.
- Ricky Braddy. Hopefully Braddy can overcome the curse of being the first second singer of the night out of 12. Will voters remember him? I hope so.
It was just all right, dog
- Anoop Desai. The judges thought he was off-key, but that his likability would probably carry him through. I hope he gets another chance.
- Ann Marie Boskovich. There were moments that hint of bigger things.
- Michael Sarver. I'm diggin' this guy's stage presence. If he's having fun, so am I.
- Tatiana Nicole Del Toro. It was the debut of the new subdued Tatiana - until she couldn't help herself and groveled for viewers' votes.
What were they thinking?
- Jackie Tohn. Turns out they didn't allow contestants to have instruments for this round, and it really hurt Tohn and the next two...
- Brent Keith. He didn't quite kick his country song into high enough gear.
- Stephen Fowler. Sailed adrift without his trusty keyboard.
Thanks for playing!
- Stevie Wright. What did she sing? I can't remember her ... at ... all.
- Casey Carlson. Do you remember Kristy Lee Cook butchering "Eight Days A Week" last year? This was worse than that.
Who were your favorites in Group 1?
