My Funny Valentine: take famous tune, add your own lyrics, times two
Posted by Nancy Leson
So, what are your plans for Valentine's Day? I hope you're going out to eat. I'll think of it as your gift to the restaurant industry. Me? I never go out to dinner on Valentine's Day for any number of reasons, explained in full this time last year. What's more, I shared my feelings on the subject in a song, sung to the tune of the classic jazz standard, "My Romance." Let me tell you, I had entirely too much fun writing those lyrics, and later called upon my musical-genius of a friend -- the inestimable Mr. Richard Gray -- to back me up on an audio version. Ever the pro he asked what key I sing it in (G), laid down a keyboard track, handed me a headset and his iPod, stood me in front of a microphone and said, "Sing it, sister!" So I did. (Hit the bar below for an earful):
(Thanks again, Rich. Love ya, babe!) I'd also like to send a little love to Eater (and sushi maniac) Matthew Lankford. Matthew made my day today by turning me on to this little number, sung to one of my favorite tunes about one of my favorite places. The catchy lyrics ("it's cilantro pizza, organic lox, four Fuji apples that come in a box") describe the many reasons why I-Heart-Trader Joe's, and I'll bet you a jar of TJ's tomato chutney and a bag of his Middle Eastern flatbread you'll agree. Think of it as my Valentine's Day gift to all of you, and be sweet this weekend, OK?
