Pizza tonight? Operators are standing by
Posted by Nancy Leson
Last year, while eating lunch at Salumi, I ran into Matt Galvin -- the owner of Pagliacci Pizza. And during the course of our conversation he mentioned something that made plenty of sense but took me by surprise nonetheless: Halloween is Pagliacci's biggest night.
As I write, 35 operators are standing by to take orders, including the queen of them all, Jun Kenney -- who I just got through chatting with at the call center where she regularly oversees a staff of 55. "We've made more dough this year than we've ever made for Halloween," said Jun, who noted that 600 pies went out early today for catered events. They had to open the Bridle Trails delivery-kitchen special, just to accommodate those ghouls over at Microsoft.
Jun's upbeat dulcet-toned voice is a familiar one: it's the one you hear when you're tapping your toes after calling for delivery. Call tonight and her (taped) spiel enthuses about free garlic -- to ward off vampires, of course. And while you change your mind again and again as the seconds tick by (Mama Lil's peppers! No, capers! No, pepperoni!), you'll also hear this familiar tune:
Well, I don't know what you're having for dinner (though I can guess what you're having for dessert), but I'm thinking pizza sounds pretty good right about now, especially since I've been talking about it since early this morning. So, how many pizzas will Pagliacci deliver this horror-filled holiday? "Thousands," says Jun, who notes that their busiest pizza kitchens are on Capitol Hill, Laurelhurst and at 85th and Dibble. She also told me that Matt Galvin will be on the job tonight, working "where ever I send him" -- something, interestingly enough, that he does every Friday night.
Yo, Matt! Get over here! And bring a Mushroom Primo with some of that free garlic -- roasted -- plus a pint of pumpkin gelato! I've got king-sized candy bars and a big tip waiting for you. Here's the tip: the Smiths, who live across the street, give out those monster-sized movie-boxes of sweets. And they'll cough 'em up whether or not you come bearing those groovy compostable pizza boxes.
