Veil lowers the veil: set to close Sunday

Posted by Nancy Leson

Veil -- the lower Queen Anne restaurant and cocktail lounge that would have celebrated its third birthday in November -- is set to close after brunch service Sunday. Veil's the latest in what will no doubt be a growing number of restaurant casualties seen before year's end.

"I'm still in the process of finalizing the details," said co-owner and chef Shannon Galusha when we spoke about the closure yesterday. He has private events scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights -- so if you're hoping to go for one last dinner, I'd suggest making reservations pronto. The house of high style known for its willowy fabric, Philippe Starck furniture and pretty-in-pink glow will soon be listed for sale, he said.

While Veil's impending demise is certainly a disappointment, "I still have my chin up," insists Galusha. "I'm an optimist and it's better to try and fail than not to try at all."

Meanwhile, his business-partner Erik Lindstrom is in Italy, where he's been for the past year studying interior design. "He wants to design restaurants and hotels, not be a restaurant operator. He's found a great calling for himself," Galusha said. As for the chef, "I still feel like I have a lot of energy, and my will isn't exhausted at this point."

Given the economic forecast, he imagines his next project as something more casual than Veil. "I do have a trattoria in mind, but it's not far enough along to announce anything. I'm still looking for some people to believe in me and offer some support." In the meantime, he said, he'll be wrapping things up at Veil and "I'm definitely going to be spending time with my new baby boy" -- adorable 4-month-old Jack:
