Not too long ago, I was running errands on a Sunday and listening to Lynne Rossetto Kasper's weekly radio show, "The Splendid Table," which airs on KUOW from 2 to 3 p.m. My favorite part is at the end, where she does a Q&A with with listeners and proves she's a pro by riffing on anything she's asked -- complete with that great laugh of hers. (Really, you've got to listen. It's like hanging over a fencepost with your food-savvy next-door-neighbor, only better).
Anyway, a caller noted that she'd recently done a segment on "My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals," and told her he was disappointed that she failed to tell her listeners what she'd eat for her "Last Supper." He suggested she enlighten us. And who knew? She told him she'd start the meal with fresh Northwest oysters, sourced by her-friend-the-oyster-guru, Jon Rowley. So was it any surprise that when Lynne showed up in Seattle yesterday to promote her latest cookbook, "The Splendid Table's How To Eat Supper," Rowley engineered an oyster-slurping shindig at Elliott's Oyster House on her behalf? There, Lynne held court in a private dining room, signing and slurping at this splendid little table:
By the way, if the guy on the left looks familiar, that's because he happens to be another fabulous cookbook author, Jerry Traunfeld, who says the latest ETA on his new restaurant, Poppy, is around Labor Day. Well, you, too, can have Lynne sign a cookbook. She'll be speaking tonight, at 7:30, at Seattle's Town Hall and you're invited. And if you tune in to KUOW (94.9 FM) as I write (or podcast it later), you can listen to her chat on "Weekday." But last night, she was yukking it up with the locals, including this familiar face: Seattle City Councilwoman, Jean Godden:
I had a great time slurping oysters, chatting with friends and being in the presence of my food-radio hero. What's more, I got to meet Elliott's national oyster-shucking champ David Leck, seen here doing what he does best:
Here's Lynne again, practicing for her "Last Supper":
